Chicago Fire: Where did Brett’s admiration of Violet come from?

In “One Crazy Shift” a subplot concerned Violet Mikami (recurring guest star Hanako Greensmith) coming over from Firehouse 20 as a temporary fill-in following the departure of Gianna Mackey. In Violet’s first scene, audiences learned that Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) had specifically asked for her to come over to Firehouse 51, and Brett spent a fair portion of the episode talking about how great Violet was and how she wanted her to be her permanent partner.

Brett finally worked up the nerve to ask Violet near the end of the episode, and Violet agreed; she had wanted to stay at 51 but wanted the idea to come from Brett and not herself.

This is all fine and good logistically, as One Chicago audiences know Greensmith will be recurring for the rest of Chicago Fire season 9 to fill the void left by Adriyan Rae’s departure. Somebody has to join Brett on Ambulance 61 for the remaining episodes so there had to be a reason why Violet would stay. However, character-wise, the whole story felt a little overenthusiastic.

How did Brett come to her conclusion that Violet is such an amazing paramedic, to the point that she specifically asked to work with her? We haven’t seen a ton of Violet yet, and most of that was related to her awkward relationship with Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende). It’s not as if she’s been a friend of Sylvie’s this whole time or that the two used to work together on another assignment. So for Brett to fall over her just didn’t seem genuine.

However, Violet is here for at least the rest of the season and that’s good news, if only because the banter between a freaked-out Gallo and the couldn’t-care-less Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri) was spot on.
