This week’s Chicago Fire is a paramedic-heavy episode, as the show continues to introduce Firehouse 51’s newest member.

One Chicago fans know the story by now: actress Adriyan Rae left the series, which brought back Hanako Greensmith to replace her. But the writers still have to get Greensmith’s character Violet Mikami feeling like part of the Firehouse 51 team, which seems to be the primary goal of this next episode, “A Couple Hundred Degrees.”

The main storyline sees Violet getting a creepy note that sends her and new partner Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) off on a chase.

Having a Violet-centered story is no surprise; the show is trying to get us to like her, and learn more about her since she’s the new main character. Just adding a character to a show isn’t enough; writers have to ingratiate that person with the viewers.

Think of it like how Chicago PD did several Vanessa Rojas-centric episodes last season; ultimately Rojas didn’t stick around, but the show certainly tried to tell audiences a lot about her and make her fit in with the Intelligence Unit.

Now Fire is doing a similar act with Violet, albeit having a little easier road since the character had already popped up before she transferred to 51.

This episode could be a portent of things to come; Greensmith was still announced as a recurring cast member, suggesting that she’s not necessarily the permanent replacement for Adriyan Rae. It could be that the show is auditioning her to see if she does mesh with fans. Maybe she’s just here for the rest of season 9 and maybe she comes back for season 10—and it probably depends on how episodes like this go over.

But after last week had the firefighters investigating exploding dryers, why not have the paramedics doing their own sleuthing this week?
