Chicago Fire season 9, episode 12 preview: Natural Born Firefighter
This week’s Chicago Fire is one of the episodes where there’s not much revealed about it ahead of time, but what we do know already has viewers buzzing.
The storyline concerning Matthew Casey’s (Jesse Spencer) health continues in “Natural Born Firefighter,” as NBC‘s official synopsis says that Casey “worries about his future with the CFD.” (What do you want to bet that he gets told he’s a natural born firefighter, and that it’s Sylvie Brett who delivers the line?)
Some fans have speculated that Spencer is on his way out of Chicago Fire and Casey’s health problems are setting up his exit. It’s worth stressing that no official word has been given on the subject, and it’s daunting to think of the show without Spencer.

But to be fair, of all the One Chicago shows, Fire is the one that’s been able to keep its character departures relatively under wraps until after they occur (see most recently Adriyan Rae) so the best thing fans can do is just watch and see what happens.

The “case of the week” story involves Mouch (Christian Stolte) and a mysterious man who helps out at the scene of a fire. After the recent comedy subplot with Mouch and his bagpipes that was one of his more over-the-top escapades, it’ll be nice to see Mouch back in a serious light. Stolte doesn’t get enough credit for how good he is in dramatic moments, and it sounds like this episode is setting him up for one.
That’s all the information the network has released, so we can only guess at the latest Stellaride update or what’s happening for any of the other main characters. Obviously Brett (Kara Killmer) will be tied up in Casey’s story, but this might be one of those episodes that focus more on one or two characters than usual.
It depends on how much screen time the Casey situation has; the weekly investigation-type plots stretch across the whole hour, but what’s going to come after Casey’s appointment and the fallout from it? Could there be tests or other things that make that plot point take up more screen time, or will there be some extra space for a comedic subplot with some of the other folks? Without more details it’s hard to judge.
