This week’s Chicago PD was a treat for Upton and Upstead fans, even if it marked a speed bump in the couple’s relationship.

Wednesday’s episode “Safe” saw Intelligence chasing a pair of violent home invaders. The case proved to be thorny for Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), who switched between siding with her partner Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and her boss Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) at different points in the episode, causing tension in both of her most important relationships.

Here’s what happened in the latest Chicago PD episode for each of your favorite characters.

Chicago PD season 8, episode 14 recap

Chicago PD starts off with an Upstead moment. Jay is talking to Hailey about the place he’s trying to take her to, and showing off his parking skills. The next day both of them show up at work massively hungover and Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) tells Upton that Voight found out she skipped out on a prestigious guest instructor gig at the police academy. Voight went to said class and was not thrilled that Hailey chose not to. She tells Voight “something personal” came up and he assures her that she’s good, before everyone is called out to a home invasion.

Intelligence finds a gunshot victim inside and Upton comforts another very terrified woman. Her name is Megan and her husband Peter is the man who was shot. She explains that her husband was wounded while trying to confront the intruders. After hearing all that, Upton reveals to Chicago PD viewers that it sounds like the same offenders from prior cases. The trick is catching them.

Halstead and Upton visit pawn shops looking for Peter’s stolen Rolex. An employee at one shop recognizes the offenders’ car, and Upton quickly looks up the shop owner Tolan’s criminal record. The duo follow him to a parking garage where the man confesses that he does, indeed, know the home invaders. Well, that was easy.

Back at the district, Tolan spills everything he knows, including that he has Peter’s Rolex and is scheduled to meet with the suspects the next day. He even offers himself up as a confidential informant! Upton is very cynical about his intentions, and says she spoke to the last cop he worked with, which gets him to admit he wasn’t exactly a model CI the last time.

When he gets a text about the location of said meet changing, Halstead and Upton bring the idea to Voight, who decides to go along with it after hearing that Peter has died. It’s not the first time that Chicago PD has used someone as bait. But as Upton and Halstead are getting Tolan ready, he just then happens to bring up a white car that was lurking around his house. They assure him he’s going to be fine and move on.
