Is Miranda Rae Mayo leaving Chicago Fire?
Fans are concerned about Miranda Rae Mayo leaving Chicago Fire after seeing the promo for next week’s episode, which poses a huge question for Stella Kidd.
SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for this week’s Chicago Fire and the teaser for the next episode. The promo is viewable here.
In Wednesday’s installment “What Comes Next,” Stella found out that she had passed her exam and was now promoted to Lieutenant.
However, the ad spot for next Wednesday’s hour, entitled “A White-Knuckle Panic,” features Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) saying that the promotion means that Stella doesn’t have a spot at Firehouse 51 anymore.

That’s because, as fans may recall, 51 already has three officers on the team: a Captain and two Lieutenants, including Stella’s boyfriend Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney).
Further fueling speculations is a similar storyline earlier this season where paramedic Gianna Mackey was offered a promotion—after which it was revealed that Adriyan Rae had departed the series.
Is Miranda Rae Mayo leaving Chicago Fire?
Entertainment Weekly spoke to Miranda Rae Mayo on Friday after “What Comes Next” had aired, and it’s not surprising that she didn’t reveal whether or not she’s going anywhere.
“I’m not ready,” the actress said in an Instagram Live interview.
“There’s just a part of this industry though, that I think it’s healthy and good to practice detachment by really embracing the impermanent nature of life, and how everything changes and everything grows,” Mayo added. “So no matter what happens, this has been one of the most transformational experiences of my life. But, you know, you always gotta be ready for what might happen.”
Naturally, fans are seizing on those comments and the promo for “A White-Knuckle Panic” with nervousness, wanting to know is Miranda Rae Mayo leaving Chicago Fire?
The truth is Miranda and showrunner Derek Haas are the only ones who know. No official word has been given about whether or not she’ll return for season 10, and based on previous changes, there may not be an announcement until and unless it actually happens.
But if you’re a Stella or Stellaride fan getting worried, also keep in mind that people fretted over Jesse Spencer potentially leaving when Matthew Casey had his head injury, and that wrapped up with no ill effects whatsoever. Fire likes to tease the possibility of character exits, but sometimes they’re false alarms.
Plus, Miranda Rae Mayo leaving would be logistically weird for Fire. It would leave Kara Killmer as the show’s only female lead, since Adriyan Rae already exited and while Hanako Greensmith has replaced her, Greensmith isn’t contracted for season 10 either. Would the show really drop its one female firefighter? Unless Miranda is ready to move on (she’s been on the show since 2015), that seems unlikely.
We’ll find out next Wednesday when the series explains if Stella stays or goes.
