When it comes to complicated relationships, Chicago Fire has developed a knack for creating intriguing and complex love romantic storylines to compliment the show’s action-packed fire and rescue storylines.

No show is complete without a little romance and will-they-won’t-they drama, which is precisely what Chicago Fire season 9 has brought for the character of Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer), who has spent the season struggling to sort out his feelings for paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and his ex-wife Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund).

Although we’ve not seen Gabby since the ninth episode of season 8, “Best Friend Magic,” she’s continued to have a lingering role on Chicago Fire through Casey’s recent romantic storyline involving Brett.

While it looked as though Casey and Brett were finally going to give in to their developing feelings for one another early on in season 9, the writers pumped the breaks when Brett confronted Casey above his feelings for Dawson. When Matt failed to assure Brett that she was his future when posed with the question of whether he’d run back into Dawson’s arms should she return to Chicago, Brett took that as the ultimate sign he wasn’t truly over his former flame.

The rift sent Casey and Brett down separate paths, but the will-they-won’t-they drama seems to have finally come to a head in season 9, episode 15, “A White-Knuckle Panic.”

Who does Matt Casey end up with on Chicago Fire?

During episode 15 of Chicago Fire season 9, Casey receives a phone call from Dawson following Mouch’s award ceremony. While we never actually hear the conversation unfold, it seems the conversation helped Casey get some clarity on his feelings.

Apparently in speaking with Dawson, Casey realizes that while they indeed shared something quite special, Dawson is his past while Brett is his now. The revelation seems to make it clear Casey has put his feelings for Dawson entirely behind him and is ready to embrace his second chance at happiness with Brett.

When does Casey tell Brett he loves her?

Not only does Casey’s conversation help to provide him with clarity regarding his feelings for Brett, but it seems speaking with Dawson Casey to finally realize what his heart has been trying to tell his head all along: that he’s in love with Brett.

After finally coming to this revelation, Casey confesses his love to Brett at Molly’s during season 19, episode 15 setting the stage for the characters to finally embrace their budding feelings and explore what a future together could look like.
