The next Chicago PD sounds like a story One Chicago fans have heard before, but is that really how it’ll play out?

“The Right Thing” involves the Intelligence Unit pursuing a crime ring that has a connection to their newest boss, Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller (recurring guest star Nicole Ari Parker).

Some viewers may consider revealing that connection a spoiler, so we’ll just say that you can find it in the promo and that Miller has a personal stake in making sure the latest bad guys are caught.

More from Chicago PD

This probably sounds familiar as Chicago PD has done a ton of stories where someone close to a main or recurring character is involved in a case. We’ve even seen it with the antagonists, because there was a whole episode about Denny Woods’ daughter.

Oftentimes, these episodes don’t end well. The family member, friend or other loved one usually ends up hurt, dead or otherwise worse than they were before. Is that what’s going to happen with Miller?

But Chicago PD hasn’t told us a lot about Samantha Miller other than the working relationship she has with Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). “The Right Thing” is the first we’re hearing about who she is outside of the office. That could be a different and interesting story; will she change her views on how to do things when the case is personal for her? Will we learn things about her that change how we as viewers see her, or how she interacts with Voight?

This episode could put a human face on the “boss” role that we’ve seen come in and out of the show for years, most of whom haven’t really connected with the team. There was Commander Emma Crowley, played by Barbara Eve Harris, but she’s been missing for awhile. Voight had a soft spot for Miller’s predecessor Katherine Brennan (Anne Heche), but otherwise, most of the types above him have been roadblocks and little else.

Let’s see if this plotline brings something new to the table, and also what it might say about the state of Intelligence and even the Chicago Police Department overall going into next week’s season 8 finale.
