Chicago Med spoilers: Chicago Med season 6 finale ending explained
By Cody Schultz
Chicago Med season 6 has officially reached its conclusion and the season 6 finale was quite the game-changer with several shocking developments including the departure of two original characters and the future of several others left up in the air.
** Warning: The following post contains spoilers from the Chicago Med season 6 finale **
How did Chicago Med season 6 end?
The big storyline of the night revolved around Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) and Will (Nick Gehlfuss), who both played major roles in the finale with both their connected storyline and solo stories for the episode.
In the episode, Natalie’s mom finally received a new heart. Between the drama that came with the transplant, she seemed to also get some closure with Crockett (Dominic Rains) in a sweet exchange that is likely to be the pair’s last given DeVitto is leaving the series. She also seemed to patch things up with Will, leading her to make a major decision in the final moments of the episode when she confessed to Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) that she was the one who stole the trail drugs, not Will.
With DeVitto exiting the series, it’s unlikely we’ll see the direct fallout of her conversation with Goodwin but it seems safe to assume Natalie will be fired from Med and perhaps relocate to help take care of her recovering mom and start anew.
Speaking of Will, he spent most of the episode arguing with Dean (Steven Weber) over how to treat Ethan (Brian Tee), who was shot in the chest at the top of the episode by Dean’s former appendicitis patient after a surprise encounter took a turn for the worst. After helping Ethan to get the treatment he needed, Will was called into Goodwin’s office and fired on the spot for stealing drugs for Natalie’s mom.
While Natalie confessed the truth to Goodwin, we imagine there will still be serious consequences for Will’s part in the ordeal. As a result, it remains unclear what the future holds for Will.

Circling back to Ethan and Dean, Ethan would eventually undergo a risky surgery which he pulled through. With a long recovery ahead, Goodwin named Dean interim chief of the ED — which should be interesting given the concerns Ethan has had about Dean’s decision-making as of late. Given Dean’s actions this season, we imagine his temporary run as chief of the ED isn’t going to earn him any new friends and should make for quite an interesting season.
Elsewhere in the episode, April (Yaya DaCosta) discovered she had been accepted into the nurse practitioners program thus setting the stage for her departure from the show as well. What’s perhaps most interesting about April’s departure, is that before learning she had gotten into the nurse practitioners program she confessed she was still very much in love with Ethan.
Between the craziness of the episode’s other stories, we also saw a shocking development in Maggie’s (Marlyne Barrett) storyline. After discovering that Vanessa (Asjha Cooper) had been selected by Ethan to further her work in the ED, Maggie was prepared to reveal the truth about her connection with Vanessa following a friendly nudge from Goodwin.
Before Maggie could break the news, though, Vanessa confessed that she had already put the pieces together herself. During a heated exchange, Vanessa made it clear she did not approve of how Maggie had come into her life and that she did not want anyone else at Med to know about their relationship.
