What’s next for Sharon Goodwin in Chicago Med season 7?
The hospital administrator (played by S. Epatha Merkerson) spent much of her time in season 6 dealing with the problems her doctors and nurses had, or the ones that they caused.
She had two other storylines: a conflict of interest when her son Michael (recurring guest star Hampton Fluker) continued working at Chicago Med as a company sales rep, and a car accident that led her to offer a job to the mother of the boy she accidentally hit.
Add it all together and it wasn’t the best of seasons for Goodwin, so how does she bounce back in the upcoming season? And what does that mean for the hospital, since she’s the one in charge?
What will happen to Goodwin in Chicago Med season 7?
While the bulk of Sharon’s screen time this season was the same as it’s always been, when you look at the big picture, she comes out of season 6 looking pretty bad.
The sixth season included several major rule-breakings that, as hospital administrator, Goodwin is ultimately responsible for. She should have fired Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) and Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) after they performed an unauthorized surgery, and at the end of the season, she did fire someone for stealing clinical trial medication—albeit the wrong person, as Natalie confessed in the season finale.
The latter led to the whole clinical trial being canceled, which has to be a huge black eye for the hospital. Fans know that Goodwin got in hot water with the board for trying to enact stricter rules on the conduct of sales reps, too; she ultimately had to reverse her changes after blowback from Gwen Garrett (a returning Heather Headley) and others.
So the hospital’s not looking so great recently, and then when you factor in that Sharon also hit a child with her car, albeit accidentally? It wouldn’t be shocking whatsoever if the board decided to question her competency next season.
Of course, she can’t get fired since S. Epatha Merkerson is staying on the show, but somebody has to be held accountable for the damage that’s been done to the hospital’s reputation and how all of the staff seem to be constantly pushing limits—and as the boss, it seems like Goodwin would have to be that person.
The silver lining of such a plot twist would be more screen time for Merkerson, who’s a great actress who doesn’t always get a lot to do, and even better if it provided a reason to see more of Heather Headley, too. But all signs point to some struggles for Goodwin, at least if Med wants to pick up where it left off.
