What’s next for Trudy Platt in Chicago PD season 9?

Amy Morton‘s cynical desk sergeant is a fan favorite, but she continues to be the show’s most underused character. The eighth season didn’t give One Chicago fans a Trudy-centric episode, and it sometimes felt like she had more to do on Chicago Fire than she did on PD.

We saw her show up when her husband Mouch (Christian Stolte) received his award, and she remains a part owner of Molly’s.

But while she may not get a lot of the limelight, Trudy remains beloved and it’s impossible to think of the One Chicago franchise without her. So are there ways that the upcoming ninth season can find more screen time for Trudy Platt?

What will happen to Trudy Platt in Chicago PD season 9?

Ever since it stopped following patrol officers, the show has struggled to find ways to write more than a Trudy scene or two per episode, because she’s down at her desk while everyone else is up in Intelligence.

But there should still be lots of material to be had from her relationships with the other characters. For example, we know that Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is going to need all the help she can get if she survives her injuries. The relationship between Burgess and Platt is one of Chicago PD‘s most fun. This would be a great time for more Trudy and Kim scenes—maybe Trudy tries to help Kim in her sardonic Trudy way.

Could you imagine Platt trying to dote on Burgess, or trying to babysit Makayla for whatever reason?

Trudy is also the show’s last remaining character to have significant pre-canon backstory with Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). The writers have utilized that sometimes, but not enough. Especially as it’s not really clear how they’re going to use Voight in the future, why not have Trudy there to bounce him off of?

It would be superbly entertaining to see a case where Voight and Trudy ride together for some reason. Or even a scene where they share a drink and talk about how policing has changed and how their lives have changed, similar to the chats we often see between Severide and Casey on Chicago Fire.

There are some good story ideas for Trudy—if the show is willing and able to make time for them in season 9.
