What’s next for Crockett Marcel in Chicago Med season 7?

What it means

The great thing for Crockett is that now he feels like a much more fully realized individual. In his first season, the similarities between him and Dr. Connor Rhodes—and Chicago Med reeling from the decision to drop Colin Donnell—made it hard to figure out who he was supposed to be. Now we’ve gotten to see the real person and not just that freewheeling, actually somewhat annoying facade he put on before. It’s intriguing to think about what future stories we could tell with him, especially since his backstory is so different from any of the other characters; there might be plot points the show has never explored before that can be explored through Crockett.

Unfortunately, he kind of got pinched by the Natalie of it all. The writers obviously had to pay off the flirting that the two characters did last season, but especially near the end of the season, we saw Crockett more just supporting Natalie with her mother than growing himself. The relationship became the focus, and of course with Torrey DeVitto on her way out, it was screen time that felt unintentionally wasted. A big moment like having Crockett say he loved Natalie loses some of its impact when the fans already know they’re not going anywhere.

So the biggest question is where does the character go from here? Yes, he opened up emotionally but it’s to someone who’s not a part of his world anymore. Who will he lean on now? (And will the show seek to pair him off again immediately, like how he flirted with April Sexton in season 5 and by season’s end was focused on Natalie?) Who’s he going to work most of his cases with? He’s a blank slate in a lot of ways when he should be finding his footing.
