What’s next for Matthew Casey in Chicago Fire season 10?

Obviously, the Brettsey hookup will play a fair part in Chicago Fire season 10. They’re a new couple, which means getting screen time while they go through the honeymoon phase. But it’d be cool to see them try to navigate this emotional space. Yes, they’ve wanted to get together but now that they have, how is this supposed to work? How do they make that changeover from being friends and colleagues into a relationship? Will there be things they need to work out (and please, let the Dawson aspect of it be settled).

Another big story for Casey should be tied to whatever Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) is going to do. The season 9 finale left it vague as to Boden’s future with the firehouse, and as the next in line, whatever choice Boden makes will directly affect Casey. One would like to think that Boden won’t leave and therefore the organizational chart stays the same, but should he move on, then does that mean Casey becomes the new boss? That would certainly shake up the place.

In general, though, we’re looking at a character we’ve followed for 10 seasons and close to 200 episodes. The challenge (and the fun) for the writers will be how do they continue to push Casey forward after this long? He’s in a whole different part of his life now—how does that manifest in his work or his personal life? Does he make different choices in season 10 than he would back in season 1? What are his goals now? This would be a wonderful season to step back, look at what he’s done so far, and pick something out that he can strive for in the future.
