What’s next for Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) in Chicago Fire season 10? That’s the million-dollar question on the minds of every Chicago Fire fan as we look ahead to the upcoming tenth season.

In the season 9 finale, “No Survivors,” Boden’s future was left very much up in the air as 51’s long-time chief found himself evaluating his future after an incredible career opportunity presented itself.

As the season came to an end, Boden was asked to consider throwing his hat into the ring for the position of deputy district chief. Not one for bureaucracy, Boden’s initial reaction was to brush the idea away but as the finale progressed he seemed to get nudged in the other direction in recognizing the impact he could in the position.

First, there was Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Herrmann’s (David Eigenberg) impassioned speech about why it’s important for there to be leaders such as Boden in administrative roles. Then, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) reminded him of the impact he’s had on her career in championing her every step of her journey.

Finally, there was Boden’s interaction with a new neighbor who gushed about how great it was to have neighbors his son could look up to and admire. This all set the stage for Boden to call up Hill in the final moments of season 9 to inform him of his decision, a decision that was revealed off-screen.

What will happen to Wallace Boden in Chicago Fire season 10?

Considering where we last saw Boden in season 9, the biggest question on the mind of fans is whether Boden will be accepting the deputy district chief role.

Given the encounters Boden had leading up to the finale, it looked as though he had decided to accept the role; however, it’s just as possible that those encounters could have persuaded him to remain in his current role in recognizing the change he’s been able to make and the impact he’s had as 51’s Chief.

Should Boden accept the deputy district chief role, the writers could explore some interesting stories for the character in season 10 by exploring his transition from Chief of 51 to deputy district chief. It would also be interesting to see how the writers would handle the change in terms of balancing his interactions with the rest of the cast via his new role.

If he were to take the deputy district chief job, it’s likely Boden would go down a path similar to the one Kidd and Severided (Taylor Kinney) have taken at various times over the years in working outside of 51. It would also be a natural progression for the character to move up the ladder.

Boden’s departure from 51 would also open the doors for the writers to shake things up a bit at 51 in introducing an interim chief to fill Boden’s shoes — which would surely ruffle some feathers at 51 and lead to some growing pains.
