Season 9 of Chicago Fire was quite the eventful season for the men and women of Firehouse 51, including longtime 51 firefighter Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso).

While the season saw Cruz continuing to grow as a member of 51 and looking to expand his business empire in building upon the success of the Slamigan, there was no greater moment for Cruz in season 9 than the discovery that he was to become a father.

One season after Cruz and Chloe (Kristen Gutoskie) exchanged their I Do’s, the happy couple learned their family would be growing as Chloe was expecting their first child. This storyline played a key role in Cruz’s season 9 arc as we watched him preparing for the arrival of his first child which, of course, included some fun hijinks with his 51 family.

While season 9 was filled with highs for Cruz, it undoubtedly ended on a bit of a low in the form of the season-ending finale cliffhanger which saw Cruz’s life hanging in the balance.

In the final moments of the season, Squad took to the waters in responding to a call involving an overturned boat. Unfortunately, the call didn’t quite go as planned for the team as they found themselves trapped in the overturned boat with no oxygen left in their air tanks as the season faded to black.

What will happen to Joe Cruz in Chicago Fire season 10?

Considering where we left Cruz when Chicago Fire season 9 came to an end, it’s going to be interesting to see what the writers have in store for Cruz next season.

The burning question on the minds of fans heading into the season is whether Cruz will make it out of the overturned boat and survive the ordeal, or whether he’ll be leaving Chicago Fire

As we’ve seen, the writers are not opposed to killing off beloved characters which definitely gives us a reason for concern. That said, we’re remaining optimistic that Cruz will survive the ordeal and be back in action in season 10.

Should Cruz indeed survive the near-death experience, we imagine season 10 could be a big one for Cruz on the personal front. Looking ahead to season 10, we imagine we should see Chloe deliver their baby which would present the writers with a wealth of storylines to explore as Cruz adapts to fatherhood and turns to his 51 family for advice along the way.

We also imagine Cruz will continue to explore ways to take his business to the next level, in searching for the next Slamigan or ways to expand the brand — but on his own terms and not with the help of an overbearing investor.

Whatever the future holds, one thing that’s certain is season 10 has the potential to be a big one for Cruz and we’re excited to see what could be next for him!
