2. Robert Haywood, Chicago Med

Not only was Dr. Sarah Reese’s father Robert Haywood (Michel Gill) a terrible person, but he was also a character who dominated almost half of Chicago Med season 3 with a strange subplot that felt more suited for Chicago PD. Why did a medical drama need to introduce a serial killer?

There was just so much to dislike about Robert and only part of it was because of what he did on-screen. In canon, audiences watched Reese (Rachel DiPillo) get clearly manipulated by her father, which ended up wrecking the wonderful mentor-student relationship between her and Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt). It was because of how Charles acted during the Robert story that Reese left the hospital, leading to Rachel DiPillo becoming the first series regular to be written out of Chicago Med.

But the other reason he ranks so high is because of what his introduction did to the show as a whole. Robert’s story never felt like it meshed with the rest of the series; instead, it came off as taking time away from characters and plots we wanted to watch more. He made the third season go off into some truly weird directions—and he was easily the most jaw-dropping character until the whole Ava debacle. Not in a good way.
