When it looking back at Kim Burgess’s (Marina Squerciati) journey on Chicago PD, it’s hard to argue that season 8 was one of, if not the, biggest season in the development of the character through the major life decisions Burgess made across the season.

Without argument, the biggest moment for Burgess in season 8 came with her decision to officially adopt Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) after taking the young girl in following the murder of her family. While momentous, we’ll admit it wasn’t too surprising as the seeds seemed to be planted from the moment Burgress first met Makayla, and the connection the two seemed to form in that very first episode she appeared in.

In adopting Makayla, Burgess also made it clear that no matter where their romantic relationship goes, Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) will always be her ride or die when she decided to name him the custodian in her adoption of Makayla. The decision was one that Burgess did not make lightly and was a major step for the pair in recognizing that Burgess knows that even if they’re not together, he’s always going to have her back.

Finally, we had the 2-part season 8 finale event which saw Burgess fighting for her life after being abducted by a pair of dangerous criminals who shot and left her for dead. Ever the fighter, Burgess managed to muster up enough strength to make it to a vehicle parked outside of where she was taken captive and turn on the emergency lights before losing consciousness – a move which ultimately helped the Intelligence Unit to find her in time and get her to safety.

So where do we go from here?

What will happen to Kim Burgess in Chicago PD season 9?

When we last saw Kim Burgess in Chicago PD season 8, Burgess had been rushed to Chicago Med where she received emergency surgery. Luckily, the team made it to her in time and our last update on Burgess as the season came to a close was that she was in stable condition and expected to have a full recovery.

Following her near-death experience, it’s going to be interesting to see how Burgess processes the experience and whether it might lead her to make any changes in the way she approaches her work, especially in the field or perhaps even on a larger level in making her reevaluate her future with the Intelligence Unit.

Given that she now has a daughter to think of, we imagine Burgess’s brush with death is going to affect her more than she’ll initially let on and it’s going to be interesting to see how that storyline plays out across the early part of the season.

It will also be interesting to see how Burgess’s near-death experience affects her relationship with Ruzek and whether it might serve as a catalyst to bring the pair back together and consider giving their relationship another shot. As we mentioned above, the two will always share a strong connection but whether they’ll decide to give their romance another try in season 9 is something that seems very much on the table.

Wherever the writers ultimately decide to take Burgess’s story in the upcoming season, we’re certain it should be another exciting season for Chicago PD‘s beloved detective.
