When it comes to shocking departures, the One Chicago franchise is no stranger to unexpected cast exits. Across Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago PD‘s various seasons, there have been countless unexpected cast shakeups over the years which have seen beloved and fan-favorite characters exit the shows with little to no warning.

Among the franchise’s most puzzling casting changes was the decision made by the writers of Chicago Med to write off the character of Dr. Connor Rhodes after the show’s fourth season.

While Med has an incredible ensemble, there is no denying that Colin Donnell’s character was among the show’s most beloved characters and played a crucial role in building the foundation of the show as a lead across its early seasons. Although the door was left open for Donnell to return as Rhodes down the line, the decision seemed to come out of left field and was one that fans still question to this day.

Why did Connor leave Chicago Med?

In the season 5 premiere, Connor became a prime suspect in the death of his father, whose sudden death came under investigation in the opening hour of the season.

While Connor emerged as the prime suspect of the Chicago PD, Dr. Latham (Ato Essandoh) fortunately would find the evidence needed to clear Connor’s name when he discovered trace evidence that identified the true killer in the insulin used to kill Connor’s dad.

Much to the surprise of viewers, the murderer turned out to be Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling), who murdered Connor’s dad because of the threat he posed to their relationship. When confronted by Connor about her actions, Ava slit her throat and died after the Med team was unable to revive her.

Following the shocking turn of events, Connor decided to leave town and disappeared into the night without even so much as a goodbye.

Is Colin Donnell coming back to Chicago Med?

It’s been two years since we last saw Colin Donnell scrub in as Dr. Connor Rhodes, but there hasn’t been a day that’s gone by which fans haven’t questioned whether there was a possibility he could return to Chicago Med. With the show saying goodbye to two original cast members this season following the departures of Torrey DeVitto and Yaya DaCosta, could the time finally be right for Connor to return?

At this time, it is unknown whether Colin Donnell will return for the upcoming seventh season of Chicago Med and there have been no official announcements from NBC as to whether conversations might have been had. While there don’t seem to be any plans confirmed at this time, Donnell has been open about his interest in returning to the series telling US Weekly in 2019 that he’d love to come back if given the chance.

"“I would love to go back. I would love to pop in here and there, and I sort of have a history of doing that now on shows! It probably won’t be as wild of ways as I do on Arrow, but I’m really very happy and thankful to them that they gave me the exit that they did so that the door is open for the future.”"

Clearly, there is an interest among the fandom in seeing Donnell back, so let’s hope the powers that be might finally find a way to bring him back into the fold.
