Chief Wallace Boden’s (Eamonn Walker) life might not have been left hanging in the balance at the end of Chicago Fire season 9, but his future at Firehouse 51 very much remains up in the air.

As season 9 came to a close, an incredible career opportunity was presented to Boden when he was asked to consider the position of deputy district chief in the CFD. While his initial reaction was to brush the job offer off without much thought in not wanting to deal with the politics that would come with the role, Boden’s stance seem to change across the episode as he realized the impact he could make in the role.

After pondering the job offer throughout the finale, Boden appeared to have reached a decision in the final moments of season 9 and ended the season calling First Deputy Commissioner Gloria Hill’s (J. Nicole Brooks) to inform her of his decision.

Because the storyline was designed as a cliffhanger, we never got to hear Boden’s decision; however, the newly released One Chicago promo trailer has us seriously concerned 51 could soon be bidding farewell to its trusted leader.

Chicago Fire season 10 trailer teases possible exit for Boden

While we’re still waiting to see if NBC will be releasing individual trailers for the One Chicago series’ upcoming seasons, the network recently debuted a dramatic new promotional teaser which offers up our first looks at the new seasons of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD.

There is a lot to digest from the trailer, but the one burning question on our minds after checking out the trailer is whether NBC has just teased Boden’s potential departure from 51.

In the opening moments of the trailer, Boden is seen standing in front of the men and women of 51 delivering an impassioned speech expressing how proud he is of the group. While praise is nothing new from Boden, it’s the way he ends his speech by noting “We will always be a family,” that has us concerned about his future with 51.

It’s possible we might be reading too much into the moment, but when you consider Boden’s future was left up in the air as season 9 came to a close the line is giving us serious goodbye speech vibes. When you add in the premiere photo that seems to find Boden packing up his office at 51 and we’re starting to seriously question whether Boden is about to begin a new career venture.

Of course, this is all speculation and could prove to be a red herring to throw us off the scent of Boden’s true decision. The good news is we won’t have to wait too much longer for answers as Sept. 22 will be here in no time!
