Chicago Fire season 10 opened with answers to all the questions from the season 9 finale. What happened to Squad 3 trapped in the boat? Did they all make it out alive?

Caution: There are spoilers from the Chicago Fire season 10 premiere in this post.

At the end of Chicago Fire season 9, all four members of Squad 3 and a civilian were trapped in a sinking boat with no air left in their tanks. We were left wondering if any of them would make it out alive, and if they would, how would it be possible?

The show wasted no time giving us a resolution to the situation. Not all of them made it out completely unscathed.

What happened to Squad 3 on the Chicago Fire season 10 premiere?

While the group was underwater, the boat sank to the bottom. As it turned, an air pocket formed. It meant there was air for everyone while Severide went back underwater to figure out another plan to get out.

He managed to find the electrical system to the boat and set it up to create a mini explosion. It was enough to create a hole in the boat, allowing everyone to get out alive. The civilian went first and then Tony and Capp. Severide looked back for Cruz, but he wasn’t there.

Cruz had drowned while underwater. Severide got him and pulled him to the surface, where Casey had rode out to meet everyone. Casey was able to perform CPR, bringing Cruz back.

What will happen to Cruz on Chicago Fire season 10?

Cruz was off work for two weeks, although we didn’t see it. The episode flashed forward two weeks, allowing Cruz to return quickly in the Chicago Fire season 10 premiere.

From there, we saw Cruz suffer from the trauma he experienced. Looking into his mask, he froze for a few seconds. However, he didn’t want to talk to his friends about it. He felt all the worse when he learned Severide was under investigation for the incident underwater.

I hope to see more of this play out in the next few episodes. PTSD is an important topic. It’s something that many first responders face, but it’s still a taboo topic for many of them. There’s that sense that mental health issues make people weak, but that’s not the case. So please give us more of Cruz’s recovery in the way we’ve seen some of Firehouse 51 struggle with the recovery from physical injuries in the past.
