Chicago PD spoilers: Does Kim Burgess die in the season 9 premiere?
Chicago PD shocked fans during last season’s finale. Not only was fan favorite Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) kidnapped by an assailant, she was subsequently shot and left for dead.
As the series returns for its season 9 premiere, the most pressing question is Burgess’s health, and whether she’ll be able to pull through her serious injuries.
Caution: There are spoilers from the Chicago PD season 9 premiere in this post.
The episode begins with the PD team talking to Burgess’s doctor. He clarifies that she made it through the surgery successfully and is in stable condition, but makes it abundantly clear that she’s not out of the woods yet. “She suffered extensive injuries,” the doctor adds. “There’s considerable internal trauma. So, we all will just need to wait.”
Who died on Chicago PD?
The uncertainty of Burgess’s condition puts a considerable strain on the rest of the team. Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger), Burgess’s former flame, goes as far as to confront the doctor and demand that he be given a straight answer.
Later in the episode, Ruzek pulls the doctor aside and asks whether Burgess will have to be placed on life support. Once more, there are no answers. The doctor explains that life support is a possibility, but clarifies that it’s still “too early” to tell.

Thankfully, Burgess’s condition seems to improve by the end of the episode. Her daughter Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) is brought in to visit her, and the reunion provides arguably the most solace Burgess has had since the shooting. Burgess is definitely on the mend, but it remains to be seen how much she’s going to have to endure before she’s back to normal.
The increased involvement of Ruzek has Chicago PD fans theorizing that the pair could get back together, or at the very least that Ruzek could help Burgess through her physical recovery. It’s a theory that’s gained even more traction in the wake of Squerciati’s interview with Hello Magazine. When asked about her character’s future with Ruzek, she hinted at the possibility of reconciliation. “Makayla and Kim have a home, and I think Adam is ready to be a part of that,” the actress added.
