Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) is never at a loss for drama. The upstanding doctor has had to deal with heartbreak, professional tragedy, and the departure of several friends over the course of Chicago Med‘s run. The season 6 finale saw Will suffer arguably his greatest setback yet, when he decided to take the blame for Natalie’s crimes and was fired by Goodwin as a result.

While Will’s firing may seem like a game-changer for Chicago Med season 7, there have been hints to suggest that the doctor will return to the Gaffney Medical Center before long. Of course, the job doesn’t tell the entire story, and Will’s career problems coincide with a personal crossroads for the character as well.

The character that Will forged one of his closest bonds with, Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVito), is leaving, and the space left by her will be felt as he embarks on the next chapter of his life. It’s elements like these that makes Will one of the show’s most enigmatic (and intriguing) characters heading into season 7.

What will happen to Will Halstead on Chicago Med season 7?

The biggest question mark heading into the season 7 premiere is whether Will can get his job back. He’s been a mainstay of the Gaffney Medical Center staff since the show launched, and his experience makes him an invaluable source for Goodwin, especially after Natalie cleared his name in the season 6 finale.

Nick Gehlfuss has since revealed that his character’s firing coincided with the end of his contract, and that he was unsure whether he would continue in the role. Fortunately for Chicago Med fans, the actor is back and poised to resume his duties as the show’s protagonist, even if it takes some extra effort to resume his duties in the ED.

That being said, all signs point to Will rejoining the Gaffney Medical Center staff. Narratively speaking, it would be the easiest way to keep him involved with the other characters, and the scenes that have been teased in promos suggest that Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) and Will are going to butt heads repeatedly throughout season 7. Archer even says that he’s looking forward to Will’s “next trainwreck”, which all but confirms that Will was forgiven for the last one.

A new romance may also be on the horizon for the good doctor. Dr. Hammer (Kristin Hager) is a newcomer to both the show and Gaffney Medical Center, and her character has reportedly known Will since med school. Nick Gehlfuss didn’t get too specific regarding Dr. Hammer, but he did tell Hello Magazine that the characters’ shared history will into play a role in their season 7 arcs.
