What happened to Roy on Chicago PD?
Chicago PD answered several burning questions in its season 9 premiere. Burgess (Marina Squerciati) survived her shooting, while Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) took their relationship to the next level and got engaged. One question that remains on everybody’s mind, however, is what happened to Roy (Michael Maize)?
Roy was the man responsible for Burgess’ kidnapping and the murder of Samantha Miller’s son, Darrell (Branden Cook). The manhunt for the character drove the season 8 finale, particularly when he crossed paths with an enraged Voight (Jason Beghe). The ruthless cop handcuffed Roy and proceeded to beat him until his vengeful display was interrupted by Hailey.
Voight decides to let Roy go, but the latter reaches for Voight’s gun. Before Roy can grab it, however, Upton fires off a shot and kills him instantly. Voight orders Upton to go home and assures her that he’ll bury the body where nobody will find it.
Who is Roy on Chicago PD?
The fate of Roy was sealed by the time season 8 came to a close, but the repercussions of his death could linger throughout season 9. Upton was visibly shaken by the fact that she killed him, and her confidence in Voight as a commanding officer has been compromised.
To make matters worse, her own sense of right and wrong have been muddied. When Burgess asks about Roy in the season 9 premiere, Upton lies and says he got away. Her decision to cover up the truth makes her complicit, along with Voight, pushes her into amoral territory she never thought possible.
Chicago PD executive producer Rich Eid confirmed that Upton and Voight will have to deal with Roy’s death at some point. “They are both complicit in the cover-up, and consequences could fall down hard on them both”, he told TV Insider.

Voight may not be phased by the situation, but Upton’s guilt has already manifested elsewhere in her life. It seems readily apparent that her fear/guilt over Roy’s death contributed to her decision to propose to Halstead in the season 9 premiere. She alludes to her reasons when she cites Burgess’ shooting as the cause of her sudden courage.
It remains to be seen if the damage caused by Roy’s death will be a legal one or a psychological one, but either way, the character has already left a big impression on the show.
