Who is Makayla on Chicago PD?

Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) has had a devastating couple of episodes. She was shot in the season 8 finale, nearly died in the season 9 premiere, and now she has to decide whether she wants to get a desk job or resume her dangerous position in the field.

It’s interesting to see the previously fearless Burgess deal with uncertainty, and it stands to reason that some of this uncertainty comes from a desire to be there for her daughter, Makayla. The mother-daughter bond has been stronger than ever in season 9, as both characters are learning how to deal with the aftermath of their close call.

Makayla looks to be a crucial Chicago PD character moving forward. She’s already begun to inform Burgess’ career decisions, and her bond with Adam Ruzek (Patrick  Flueger), grows stronger with each new episode. Here’s a brief rundown on Makayla and the talented young actress who plays her.

Ramona Edith Williams plays Makayla

Makayla is played by Ramona Edith Williams. The talented performer was born in May 2012, and by the time she was four years old she had won the Pure International Pageants Toddler Miss America. Williams has also won first and second place awards at the ISI World Recreational Championships, and performed at the 2016 ISI Education Foundation Benefit Show.

Williams auditioned for Chicago PD in 2020, but production was put on hold due to COVID-19. She was eventually brought on when filming resumed, and it remains her lone acting role to date. That said, she’s a natural, bringing a warmth and a tenderness to the role that brings the best out of her adult co-stars.

Who is Kim Burgess’ daughter on Chicago PD?

Makayla’s backstory is tragic as anything on the show. Her biological mother was murdered by her father and his girlfriend in the season 8 episode “Tender Age”. Makayla witnessed the murder, and soon thereafter began to develop traumatic nightmares. She was placed in the care of a surrogate mother named Kathy, but Kathy decided she couldn’t handle the responsibility and put her into government care.

Burgess, who bonded with Makayla during her mother’s case, found out about the government care situation in the episode “In Your Care.” Despite being uncertain over whether she was ready for motherhood, Burgess decided to take Makayla on as a surrogate parent. The pair have been inseparable ever since.

Despite their close bond, the mother and daughter might be headed for trouble in season 9. Squerciati told TV Line that Burgess’ trauma might cause some issues when it comes to maintaining a good environment. “There are going to be some tests with Makayla coming up”, she revealed. “So far, they’ve been building, and I think something might crumble pretty soon.”
