Will S. Epatha Merkerson leave Chicago Med to join the Law & Order revival?

In 2010, NBC shocked Law and Order fans everywhere when the network announced the cancellation of its long-running drama one season shy of what would have been a record-breaking season for the series which helped to launch one of the most successful franchises of all time (and the careers of countless actors).

Now, the network is looking to finally do right by its iconic series by staging a revival of the flagship series with the order of Law and Order season 21 expected to debut sometime in 2022.

Although little is known about the revival other than that it will continue to focus on “the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders,” and will feature the returns of key players from the show.

With NBC bringing Law and Order back for season 21, should Chicago Med fans be concerned that S. Epatha Merkerson will leave Med for Law and Order?

Is S. Epatha Merkerson leaving Chicago Med?

At this time, there have been no reports suggesting S. Epatha Merkerson will be leaving Chicago Med so it remains to be seen whether this might be her final season with the show.

We do know that she extended her contract with Med during the offseason, which helped ensure her return for season 7; however, it’s unknown if the new deal was a multi-year deal or if it was simply a one-year deal.

Thus far, no casting announcements have been made regarding who from the Law and Order cast might be returning for season 21; however, it is possible Merkerson could be tapped to reprise her iconic role as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren, a role she played across all 20 seasons of the show.

Considering both Chicago Med and Law and Order are both Dick Wolf-produced series that air on NBC, there is definitely a possibility Merkerson could reprise her character in a limited capacity. However, it seems highly unlikely she’d be able to maintain active roles on both Med and Law and Order which could lead NBC to make a difficult decision in determining which series it would be most beneficial for her to have a larger role on.

Given her history with Law and Order, we could absolutely see NBC wanting to bring her back into the mix to reprise her role as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren. After all, it is hard to imagine Law and Order without arguably’s its most recognizable star.
