It looks like Matthew Casey is saying goodbye to Firehouse 51. Is Casey leaving Chicago Fire for real, or is the show just scaring us?

Caution: There are some spoilers from Chicago Fire season 10, episode 4 in this post as well as the promo for the next episode.

We’re getting to the 200th episode of Chicago Fire. These milestone episodes tend to have something big happen, and it looks like for our show, it’s going to involve the exit of a character.

During the most recent episode, Casey went out of town to see how Griffin and Ben were living. He wants to help them, but when he suggested bringing them back to Chicago to be their guardian, the social worker and the school guidance counselor both disagreed. The boys have a connection to their current town and are close enough to be able to visit their mom in prison.

Is Matthew Casey leaving Chicago Fire?

So, the only thing Casey can do to be a guardian to the boys is to go to them. He doesn’t want to see them split up in separate foster homes, but is he willing to sacrifice his career and potentially his relationship with Brett?

It certainly looks like Casey has made up his mind. In the promo for the 200th episode, we get this sense that it’s a goodbye episode. Everyone is ready to see him go except for Brett. There’s a brief moment in the promo that sees the two discuss what it could mean for their relationship.

The relationship with Brett could be the main thing that keeps him in Chicago. However, is it going to be enough when it means two young boys being split up? Would Brett really want to keep Casey with her knowing what is going to happen to Griffin and Ben?

Why is Casey leaving Chicago Fire?

Jesse Spencer hasn’t said anything about leaving, but that doesn’t mean he’s not. We often complain as fans that we get this warning of actors leaving and then it leads to spoilers. Why would Chicago Fire ruin this grand exit? And if Casey leaves Firehouse 51 to be a guardian to two boys, it’s definitely going to be grand.

Casey leaving Chicago Fire will also solve another problem. Right now, Kidd has to go to another firehouse to be a lieutenant. Casey leaving opens the door for a new lieutenant for Truck. That could lead to Kidd getting that position so she can be lieutenant at her own firehouse.

In a way, I hope the show goes through with this exit. It feels real. Life circumstances show up when you least expect it, and we need to make these major decisions. Seeing Casey leave in the 200th episode for something connected to the very first episode of the series is just beautifully bittersweet.
