Chicago PD takes a grim turn with its latest episode. While the first leg of season 9 has had heavy themes like trauma and past mistakes, the episode “In the Dark” hints at a potential splintering within the Chicago PD team. Most notably, between Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Voight (Jason Beghe).

The season 8 finale, and the controversial murder of Roy come back into play, which takes a huge emotional toll on Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). She’s racked with guilt and insecurity over whether her actions will be discovered by the FBI, and Halstead has taken notice.

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the episode “In the Dark”!

What happened on Chicago PD last night? (October 13th)

The episode sets up its central conflict within the opening scene. Upton is suffering from insomnia, and her attempts to calm herself down only result in more restless nights. She decides to head to the station in the middle of the night, where her and Ruzek intercept a call for an abduction at a place known locally as the “death house”. The officers stumble upon a crime scene that hints at a potential child murderer.

The team pursue a number of different leads, but the further she becomes involved with the case, the more obvious it becomes that Upton is not fit for duty. She harasses a suspect in custody, only to step away and see him commit suicide before he’s booked. While the suicide was not directly her fault, Upton’s confusion over whether she frisked him for weapons leads to an awkward moment of silence between her and a concerned Voight.

To make matters worse, its a moment that Halstead immediately picks up on. The detective sees Upton and Voight having suspicious chats by themselves throughout the episode, and given his visible anger, one might assume that he suspects the two are having an affair. Halstead even asks Upton if anything happened between her and Voight the night they pursued Roy. She gives a quick, unconvincing, “no.”

Is Jay Halstead leaving Chicago PD?

The team solve the case (though the other team members have little to do in this episode). Halstead pulls some tricky maneuvers to determine where Voight is located, and the two eventually meet up at a secluded location. Halstead confronts him about what happened, and while Voight initially tries to shoulder the blame for killing Roy, he ultimately comes clean and admits to what Upton did.

Halstead refuses to believe it, and Voight, calm as ever, says, “I don’t think you know the woman you’re sleeping next to.” Before he even finishes speaking, Halstead cocks one back and punches him square in the face. Voight doesn’t retaliate, knowing all too well that Halstead is going to have to come to grips with the truth.

The two part ways, and Halstead returns home to an exhausted Upton. He stands in the doorway with an angry expression on her face, and Upton responds with concerned silence. The episode ends on a concerningly tense moment, hinting at the explosiveness of what could be next for the couple’s relationship.

While fans may have hoped for more regarding Halstead and Upton, the buildup to the ultimate reveal was wonderfully done, and serves as a great cliffhanger for what’s sure to be a pivotal season 9 subplot.
