Chicago Fire: Monica Raymund nearly returned in season 9 – here’s why she didn’t

It’s been nearly two years since Monica Raymund appeared in an episode of Chicago Fire, but it turns out Raymund nearly reprised her role as paramedic turned firefighter Gabby Dawson in season 9!
According to Deadline, Raymund was set to return as Dawson sometime in season 9 via a storyline that would have explored Brett’s (Kara Killmer) struggle to embrace her romantic feelings for Casey (Jesse Spencer) due to the friendship she shared with Gabby and Sylvie’s fear that Casey was still harboring feelings for his ex-wife.
As fans will recall, this storyline did play out in season 9; however, it did so without any appearance from Raymund. While Gabby did play a role in the season and was name-dropped in an episode that saw Casey connecting with her off-screen via phone calls, Raymund never directly appeared in the episode.
The writers ultimately had to have the conversation take place off-camera due to the fact that Raymund was unable to return due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Is Monica Raymund coming back to Chicago Fire?
At this time, there are no reports suggesting Monica Raymund will be returning to Chicago Fire; however, Raymund has been open in her willingness to return to the show if the story and her schedule permit.

Considering the plan to bring her back in season 9 was connected to a storyline involving Casey and that he’s since left Chicago, it seems unlikely there would be a natural reason to bring Dawson back in the upcoming episodes. That said, we could absolutely see her returning later in season 10 for Severide’s (Taylor Kinney) wedding should the Stellaride wedding take place before the season is over.
The good news is that Raymund continues to maintain a strong relationship with Wolf Entertainment, having most recently returned to the franchise as a director on Law and Order: Organized Crime, Starz’s and has expressed an interest in returning. For now, we’ll just have to enjoy Raymund in her current role on Hightown.
