Chicago PD: What happened to Officer Andre Cooper?

Andre Cooper (Cleveland Berto) made a sizable impression on Chicago PD audiences in season 8. The rookie officer was pegged as a “golden boy” officer who turned down an opportunity to work on Wall Street to work for the department’s 21st District Intelligence Unit.

Cooper was radically different than Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) in that he preferred to take down criminals by always following the rules. The dramatic tension that resulted was fascinating, and seemed to hint at a larger role for Cooper in the future.

Will Cleveland Berto return to Chicago PD in season 9?

Chicago PD showrunners have made no mention of Berto’s return in season 9. The three episode arc the character underwent looked to be a trial of sorts, but given the emphasis on the main cast in season 9, it appears as though the decision has been made to go in a different direction.

While there hasn’t been any news of Berto’s return, the actor seemed to get along wonderfully with the rest of the cast. Beghe spoke highly of Berto’s talents during an interview with Give Me My Remote.

"“He did a fantastic job on a three-episode arc”, Beghe stated. “He informed the team in a way — he played more of a Gen-Z kind of cop, and a very, highly ethical … there’s a negative connotation to the word, but I’m going to use it without any of that: He’s woke and aware. And he helped us tell a story that needs to be told. And he did a fantastic job and we all miss him; he is terrific.”"

Fortunately, Andre Cooper is alive and well in the One Chicago universe, and given the positive reception the character has gotten so far, the door is wide open to bring him back at a later date. We could easily see Cooper returning in the wake of a character’s departure, or stepping up in the event that a starring actor needs to take a small break from the show.

Whatever the capacity, we’d love to see him reappear.
