Chicago PD: Are Halstead and Upton going to break up?

Chicago PD season 9 has been particularly rough for Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer). The former has been racked with guilt and anxiety over her decision to help cover up a murder in season 8, and the latter has been torn between turning her in and helping keep the truth under wraps.

Regardless of what happens with the murder, the shared tension has weighed on their romance. What was once a close and adoring bond has lessened, as the few interactions we’ve seen them have in recent episodes reflect Halstead’s dissatisfaction.

The question on everybody’s minds, of course, is whether Halstead and Upton are heading for a break up. Let’s sift through the evidence we have so far and assess the chances of a PD split.

Did Halstead and Upton break up in Chicago PD?

The biggest sign pointing to a break up came during a One Chicago Center interview with Soffer. The actor was discussing the role that his fictional brother, Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), will play in his character’s wedding, but his answer hinted at the possibility of there not being a wedding at all.

“I think it’s going to be so bumpy at first, that I don’t foresee Will needing to help Jay with his Best Man’s speech,” Soffer stated. “If Will is involved, then that would mean that everything is going well and is probably running smoothly for Jay because maybe the marriage is really going to happen.”

While there’s a distinct possibility that Halstead and Upton stay together, and merely decide to delay getting married, the fact that a wedding could be taken off the table spells big trouble for them as a couple.

Either way, distrust seems to be the key word for Halstead and Upton in season 9. Soffer told Cinemablend that things will never be quite the same between them as a result of the cover up.

"“Obviously, between Jay and Hailey, it’s going to cause probably some distrust”, he revealed. “You know, it’s a huge secret she was keeping for a while. But all of that will be some juicy stuff for the fans, that’s for sure.”"

Given how beloved Halstead and Upton are as a couple, we’d be shocked if they split for good. We more expect there to be relationship problems that linger throughout the season, and eventually get a resolution once the characters decide to be transparent with each other. Of course, time is the only real way to tell what the future holds in Chicago PD.
