Chicago Med is throwing viewers for a loop. The medical drama has gone on a brief hiatus for the holiday season, though it will return for a riveting mid-season finale that’s sure to have people talking.

The thing is, the schedule for the show has been a bit confusing. There are several starts and stops planned for the rest of 2021, and it can be tricky for audiences desperate to catch the mid-season finale to determine when it’s supposed to air.

Here’s a breakdown of Chicago Med‘s upcoming schedule and whether a new episode aired last night on NBC.

When will Chicago Med return?

Chicago Med was not on last night. The time slot generally reserved for new episodes was filled with a rerun of the season 7 episode “To Lean In or to Let Go”. Chicago Med was the only one of the three One Chicago shows to get a rerun last night, as the time slots for Chicago PD and Fire was taken over by a two-hour Saturday Night Live Thanksgiving special.

The series will follow suit with the rerun format on Wednesday, December 1, before returning briefly for its mid-season finale on December 8. The new episode will be titled “Secret Santa Has a Gift for You”, and the synopsis reads as follows (courtesy of CarterMatt):

"“The outcome of Will’s investigation weighs heavily on his mind as he works with Dylan to save a 4-month-old patient. Stevie and Vanessa both struggle to keep their secrets. Crockett and Blake work with Abrams to save a patient in need of a liver transplant.”"

The episode is almost certain to come with a cliffhanger that keeps fans talking until the show’s full-time return. The title also implies that the show will attempt something slightly different than years prior, and lean into the holiday season by incorporating it into the story of the episode.

Once the episode airs, Chicago Med will go back on hiatus until January 2022.
