Chicago PD spoilers: Atwater’s lies put him in a tricky position as season 9 continues
Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) has experienced some major developments in Chicago PD season 9. The veteran cop entered into a romantic relationship with a woman named Celeste (Amanda Payton) in the episode “Burnside”, but he was secretive about his profession.
Now, it seems, Atwater’s deception is going to come back to bite him. A recent interview with Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan hints at some major drama involving Celeste and his character.
Here’s what you should expect from Atwater for the rest of Chicago PD season 9. Be warned that there will be slight spoilers for the rest of the season.
Who is Kevin Atwater’s girlfriend in Chicago PD season 9?
Gwen Sigan told TV Line that Atwater is set to have some “powerful episodes” lined up once the show resumes in January 2022.
“We’ll dive once again into his relationship with Celeste, a woman he cares deeply about but who isn’t aware he’s a cop”, she explained. “Atwater’s lies put him in a tricky position — both morally and on the job. It’s quite a dilemma for him and also explores some deep territory Atwater’s been dealing with this season.”
Sigan went on to cite a laundry list of themes and issues that Atwater will be facing, with the most notable being “his relationship to being police, and his identity at large”. Atwater has been notably unlucky when it comes to finding love, so it’ll be interesting to see how he navigates the complex dynamic that he’s created.

If that weren’t enough, Atwater is going to have to contend with the discovery that Voight (Jason Beghe) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) covered up the murder of Roy Walton (Michael Maize) in the season 8 finale. Actor LaRoyce Hawkins discussed the fallout of the cover up with TV Insider.
“He doesn’t know exactly what yet, but there are familiar feelings of secrecy and intensity that he’s noticing between people in his unit that he doesn’t know how to define yet”, the actor said. “The things that he’s investing in have nothing to do with that just in case he can’t be seen with these people. We got our dirt. We are not a clean unit.”
Regardless of what happens with Atwater come the finale, it’s clear that he’s going to play a huge role in the remaining events of season 9.
