Is Severide leaving Chicago Fire?
Chicago Fire has been forging ahead without several major characters. Casey (Jesse Spencer) left during the monumental 200th episode, and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) has been sporadically MIA to promote her Girls on Fire program.
Severide (Taylor Kinney) has been the anchor of Firehouse 51, but the departure of so many close friends might just be wearing on him. Severide struggled to make contact with Kidd throughout the mid-season finale, “Winterfest”, and he seemed to find refuge by going and getting drinks with Seager (Andy Allo).
It’s during this time out that Severide is introduced to the idea of leaving the 51 for good. Here’s what you need to know about Severide and his future on Chicago Fire.
Is Taylor Kinney leaving Chicago Fire?
Seager runs a series of fire investigation cases by Severide, and upon realizing that he still has the skills to solve them, she urges him to join the department. Severide initially shoots down the idea, but once Seager excuses herself to go to the bathroom, his facial expression changes and conflict registers.
He takes out his phone to message Kidd, but his phone shows that she still hasn’t responded to the last several texts. It’s one of several instances in the episode of Severide seeming out of sorts with his environment, and being unsure of what the future holds in store. His best friend is gone and his fiancé has been physically and emotionally distant.
There’s also the growing tension between Severide and Seager. It’s obvious that the latter is into the former, and she’s gone out of her way to showcase her romantic interest. The more Severide feel alienated by Kidd, the more he’s seemingly open to the idea of spending time with the Fire Investigation lieutenant.

So will Severide eventually leave Chicago Fire? Will the longtime firefighter make a career change in the hopes of making a positive change in his life? It’s a storyline that could be explored at a later date, but we don’t see it happening anytime soon.
Given that the show is still adjusting to the exit of Casey and the brief but notable exit of Kidd, it would be unwise of the showrunners to try and take out another main character.
There’s also been no mention of Taylor Kinney taking on additional projects or wanting to pursue different opportunities, so we’re confident that Severide is just experiencing a rough patch and will remain a vital part of the 51 team.
