Is Jesse Spencer returning to Chicago Fire?
Matt Casey’s exit from Chicago Fire was one of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire series. Nobody wanted to see the 51 veteran leave, but at the very least, the showrunners kept the door open for his possible return in the future.
Casey’s actor, Jesse Spencer, made it clear that he wanted to spend more time with his family than he had during his stint on Chicago Fire, but he did say that he would be willing to appear in a small cameo or participate in a guest star arc.
Here’s what we know about Casey’s potential story arcs and whether Spencer will actually appear.
Is Matt Casey going to return to Chicago Fire?
During a recent chat with Cinemablend, Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas revealed that Brett (Kara Killmer) will be going to visit Casey during the second half of season 10. He noted that while the visit will take place mostly offscreen, there’s a chance that fans will get to see Spencer reprise his role as the beloved firefighter.
"“She’s definitely gonna go see him at some point in the second half of the season”, Haas revealed. “We don’t have all of those i’s dotted and t’s crossed yet, but she’s gonna go see him. And then hopefully, if everything breaks my way, we can get Jesse to come back and at least do an episode or two towards the end of the season, so that would be nice.”"
While the showrunner appears to be playing his cards close to the chest, he went on to reveal that he’s been in contact with Spencer, and that the two of them have been discussing potential stories that would allow for the actor to slip back into the role.
"“I never try to predict what’s going to happen production-wise, but we’re in the camp of whenever Jesse wants to come do an episode with us, we will move mountains and earth to make that happen”, Haas added. “So we’ve been talking, we’ve been talking, we’ve got some ideas of what that would be.”"

Haas clearly wants to get Spencer back on the series, even if its to resolve a few open plot threads and/or to say goodbye to characters he didn’t get a chance to during the 200th episode (the lack of a goodbye between Casey and Kidd was instantly pointed out by fans).
The chances of seeing Spencer return are looking better with each passing interview. Haas would not have thrown the notion out so freely were he not confident that it will happen, and the actor has already proven that he’s willing to go the extra mile to reward fans. He’s technically already made a cameo since his departure, when he left a voicemail on Brett’s phone.
We will be waiting with baited breath to see if Casey does in fact return during season 10.
Chicago Fire returns in 2022 on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 9/8c on NBC. Catch up on the season so far on Hulu.
