What’s next for Stella Kidd when Chicago Fire returns in January?
Stella Kidd is the biggest question mark heading into the second half of Chicago Fire‘s season 10. The character has been notably absent, and her refusal to stay in touch with her loved ones cost her a promotion at Firehouse 51.
If that weren’t enough, her silence has jeopardized her relationship with her fiancé, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney). She returned to Chicago in the final moments of the mid-season finale, though it remains to be seen whether she’s happy about it.
As we count down the days until Chicago Fire returns in 2022, we thought it’d be a good time to look at Kidd and what might be in store for her future.
Is Stella Kidd going to leave Chicago Fire?
From a professional standpoint, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) is in a tough spot. Showrunner Derek Haas has stated that the character is going to be stuck in a game of “musical chairs”, in that there are more firefighters than there are positions at the 51. Kidd’s vanishing act resulted in Pelham (Brett Dalton) getting the new lieutenant gig, and there will definitely be tension as the two learn to co-exist.
"“You can hear about how much she means to people there, but it’s different when you see it, so [Pelham is] going to be faced with seeing it for the first time” Haas told TV Insider. “And at this point, he doesn’t even know that Severide and Kidd are an item, so that’s going to be discovered as this goes forward.”"
Haas primed fans for even more drama when he conducted a similar interview with Entertainment Tonight. The showrunner claimed there was “a lot to talk about” when it comes to the relationship between Kidd and Severide, and that there will need to be “major renovations” if they’re going to make it work.

Relationship problems are going to be a guarantee for both Kidd and Severide moving forward. Not only did Haas hint at the possible end of their engagement, but he referenced the complex dynamic Severide has with Wendy Seager (Andy Allo) as a contributing factor.
The cast and crew for Chicago Fire have directly let us know that Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Brett (Kara Killmer) are going to stay together, so the ambiguity surrounding Kidd and Severide may be the most damning piece of evidence. The days of Stellaride may be numbered.
Chicago Fire returns in 2022 on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 9/8c on NBC. Catch up on the season so far on Hulu.
