Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) has taken a backseat to some of the other characters in Chicago PD season 9. With all of the uncertainty surrounding the fates of Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Voight (Jason Beghe), it’s understandable that Burgess’ path towards physical and emotional stability would be pushed to the margins.

That won’t be the cast during the second half of the season, however. There have been several interviews with Chicago PD showrunners that confirm the importance of Burgess’ character in 2022.

Here’s a rundown of what to expect from the Burgess character in season 9.

Is Burgess going to find out the truth about Roy?

For starters, Burgess, will inch closer to the truth surrounding the death of her attacker, Walton (Michael Maize). Voight and the gang agreed to cover up the Walton shooting as a means of doing away with the chance that he get off, but the tradeoff for their decision (beyond an FBI inspection) was that they had to lie to Burgess about the character’s fate.

Upton’s actress, Tracy Spiridakos, discussed the possibility of breaching the secret during a recent interview with TV Insider. “I really want to, and I’m not sure. We’re only on Episode 13 right now, so I’m not sure what’s coming up, but I would really love that”, Spiridakos explained. “We had that moment in the hospital.”

Furthermore, there’s the growing romantic tension between Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger). The former couple have hinted at the possibility that they might get back together, especially since they’ve formed a kind of surrogate family with Makalya in tow, but the lack of a proper title has caused some friction.

In the promos for the episode “Home Safe”, Burgess states that she doesn’t want Ruzek to be as involved in Makayla’s life if he’s going to be actively pursuing relationships with other women. She reasons that it will confuse Makayla, though there’s also the possibility that Burgess could be testing the waters to see if Ruzek will make a concrete decision regarding their dynamic.

Burgess is going to be faced with several different challenges, both personally and professionally, in the remainder of the season, but her commitment to raising Makayla and doing her job to the best of her ability ensure that she’s going to forge ahead no matter what.
