Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Severide (Taylor Kinney) have seen better times. The inseparable duo have become distant in the wake of Kidd’s return, and things have gotten so bad between them that their future as a couple is unclear.

In the episode “Back with a Bang” Kidd tried to explain her behavior during her absence, and while Severide took her apology in stride, he spent the rest of the episode creating a barrier between the two of them.

The episode culminated with Severide asking whether Kidd still wanted to get married, and before she could answer, the screen cut to black… Here’s a rundown of what showrunner Derek Haas has to say about the couple’s future.

Are Severide and Kidd going to break up?

During a recent interview with ET, Haas confirmed that the rest of season 10 is going to be rough on Kidd and Severide. “There’s a lot to talk about”, he noted. “It’s both her place at the firehouse and her place with her relationship with him that’s going to need some major work-in-progress-type renovations. Major renovations.”

There were several instances throughout “Back with a Bang” where Kidd made the effort to show that she wanted to be around Severide, but his frustration over being left in the dark is still felt. He turns down her offer to get drinks so he can hang out with the rest of the 51, and leaves shortly after they make love in the morning.

"“He doesn’t know quite how to react to that situation of being ignored… or abandoned for the most part, even if the reasons were good and noble”, Haas added. “This is going to be a source of concern going into the second half of the season.”"

While Haas’ comments certainly don’t inspire happiness is in the near futures of either character, the word choice is, strangely, hopeful. By saying that “major renovations” are going to be needed, and that Severide coming to grips with his issues will dominate the rest of season 10, he’s saying that the couple are not headed for a breakup anytime soon.

We can definitely foresee a future where the couple work through their issues, especially given the strength of their romantic bond historically. That said, the immediacy of their engagement may be in jeopardy. Regardless of what Kidd has to say in response to Severide’s question, the very fact that she paused does not invite positive assumptions.

While we hesitate to say that Kidd and Severide are doomed, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see their engagement be put on the backburner, so that they can focus on defining and understanding their new dynamic.
