Did Atwater and Celeste break up on Chicago PD?
Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) has a tough road ahead. The veteran police officer revealed his profession to his girlfriend Celeste (Amanda Payton) after keeping it secret for weeks, and, as to be expected, it didn’t go well.
The episode, aptly titled “Lies”, ended with Celeste chastising Atwater for not being honest with her, and orders him to leave her apartment. It’s a pretty downbeat note, and it leaves plenty of room to speculate as to whether the couple are split up.
Here’s a rundown of Atwater and Celeste, and what the actors have to say about their future in season 9.
Is Celeste going to break up with Atwater?
For all intents and purposes, Atwater and Celeste are broken up. The latter wasn’t able to overlook the deception, and her decision to kick him out of the apartment made it clear that she isn’t going to tolerate any more.
During a recent interview with TV Line, LaRoyce Hawkins spoke on the Atwater character and what led to his romantic downfall. “Atwater got in his own way”, he noted. “As he tried to control it all and take care of everything and everybody, he neglected some important principles that don’t work out for him in the end”.
While Atwater’s reluctance to be honest with Celeste was an acknowledged mistake, the actor has hope that things could be reconciled at some point down the line. “I think if they give each other enough time and then they process the situation, they should be able to find themselves or at least cross paths”, the actor noted.

Atwater’s romantic history is littered with close calls and failed connections, so we sincerely hope that he’s able to overcome the setbacks he has with Celeste and start things off on a fresh foot. The couple have terrific chemistry and Celeste allows Atwater to connect with a different part of himself, in contrast to his job.
Regardless of what happens, expect to see an emphasis on the friendship between Atwater and Burgess (Marina Squerciati). It was Burgess who Atwater decided to confide in, and Burgess who urged him to come clean to Celeste.
Hawkins told TV Line that he’s looking forward to having more scenes with the Burgess character, as they’ve gone from comic relief to a pair who have a genuine respect for one another.
"He noted that their personal lives have also informed the writing. “[Marina] and I are parents”, he explained. “And it’s interesting where our conversations take us because it parallels very much the kinds of conversations that Atwater and Burgess have”."
