Chicago PD spoilers: What happened in season 9 episode 11?

Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) is the central focus of the new Chicago PD. The clash between his personal and professional lives comes to a head, as he’s forced to juggle a criminal case with his burgeoning relationship with Celeste (Amanda Payton).

Atwater has taken a backseat to characters like Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Voight (Jason Beghe), so it makes sense that he get a spotlight episode to himself.

What happened on Chicago PD last night? (January 12th)

The episode opens, fittingly, with a conversation between Atwater and Celeste. The latter gives him a painting that one of her students made, but before he can express how much he enjoys it he gets a call to go into the station.

We come to find out that Atwater has been working undercover in an effort to quell an increasing number of fentanyl overdoses. He meets with his contact, Jimmy, who promptly gets arrested and discovers that Atwater is actually cop. This sense of betrayal, between Atwater and a person who he respected, comes to serve as a microcosm of the bigger conflict the cop is having with Celeste.

Through a series of complicated double-crosses, Jimmy is snatched up by local dealers and Voight is forced to call on his source, the enigmatic Anna (Carmela Zumbado), to help out. Anna discovers that Jimmy stole $75K from a local dealer and has a bounty on his head, and a resulting shootout results in the death of Jimmy’s brother Fernando.

The guilt over what happened with Jimmy reaches an apex in the culmination of the episode. A distraught Jimmy takes Tovar, the dealer responsible for his brother’s death, hostage, and Atwater tries to talk him out of doing something he’s going to regret. Unfortunately, the bad experiences keep getting worse, and Atwater isn’t able to sway things. Jimmy pulls the trigger and kills Tovar in cold blood.

Jimmy is arrested, and Atwater is urged by Burgess (Marina Squerciati) to be honest with Celeste about his profession. He does just that, and Celeste is rightfully outraged. Atwater explains that he was worried she would leave him if she know, and she responds by saying that she would’ve loved him regardless.

Celeste then kicks Atwater out of the apartment, leaving the future of their relationship in the balance. Atwater ends the episode on an incredibly shaky note, as his attempts to juggle the personal and professional result in both falling apart. It’ll be interesting to see how the cop handles his setbacks for the rest of season 9.
