Dr. Ethan Choi had an emotionally charged return to Chicago Med. The character made a brief appearance in the ED, where he was forced to confront the contentious relationship he had with his father, Patrick (Francois Chau).

Due to the busy filming schedule of Brian Tee, however, the character will be going back on hiatus. Thankfully, the actor and the writers have been forthright with their plans for the good doctor, and they have provided plenty of teasers for the rest of season 7.

Here’s what you can expect from Tee and the character of Dr. Choi.

What happened to Dr. Ethan Choi on Chicago Med?

Showrunner Diane Frolov dropped some crucial information about Choi’s return during a recent interview with TV Insider. “We are going to check in with him”, she revealed. “He’s still going to be in therapy, he’ll be post-surgery in episode 12… but he still is not returning. He returns in episode 18.”

The mention of Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) make sense given the close bond the two men have developed in recent episodes. In the most recent, it was Charles who encouraged Choi to mend fences with his father for the sake of his own mental health.

Tee spoke on the character and how his injuries have changed during a separate TV Insider chat. “It’s much more of the mental that he has to work on”, he explained. “What he’s gone through and is still going through can really change a person, so you’ll see a different Ethan than fans are used to when he returns.”

The actor also touched on the way that Dr. Choi feels about his failed relationship with April (Yaya DaCosta), who departed at the beginning of the season.

He acknowledges that Choi is still getting over the loss, but that he feels the two are still in contact and on good terms. He was a bit more coy when it came to the status of April’s return. He expressed his excitement at the possibility of her making a cameo, but maintained that it was “up to Yaya”.

All things considered, Dr. Choi is looking at a tough road ahead. The character has a lot of progress to make before his eventual return, but given the strength and tenacity he’s shown over the last six seasons, we’re confident that he’ll be able to pull through and be all the better for it.
