Hallie Thomas (Teri Reeves) was an integral part of Chicago Fire for its first season. She was quickly established as the on-again/off-again love interest of Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer), and together they made up the most exciting romance of the show’s first half.

Even after the couple decided to call it quits for good, Hallie proved to be a top flight character who was terrific at her job and well-liked by her peers. Given her relevance to the first season, however, there may be some fans who wonder what happened to her.

Here’s a recap of Hallie Thomas and why she’s no longer on the show.

Hallie made her debut in the pilot, at which point she and Casey had already been romantically involved. They split due to the fact that Hallie didn’t want to have children, and she temporarily relocated to South America in an attempt to start anew. She came back and gave it another go with Casey.

Sadly, the romance between the two was cut short when Hallie was killed in the season 1 episode “Leaders Lead”. The character was discovered inside a locked security cage when the Firehouse 51 squad answer a call to put out a hospital fire. Hallie was pronounced dead soon after.

When the Medical Examiner’s report is released, its revealed that Hallie died prior to the events of the fire, as she was truck in the back of the head by a drug trafficker named Timothy Campbell (James Anthony Zoccoli). It was determined that she would have died from the blow even if the subsequent fire hadn’t occurred.

Casey is understandably shaken by the events surrounding Hallie’s death. His various attempts to get married and start a family can be traced back to this season 1 tragedy, and his season 10 plot to look after the kids of his deceased friend seem like a direct callback to his desire to have kids in comparison to Hallie.

Casey never caught Campbell, the man responsible for Hallie’s death. Ironically, it was another One Chicago character (one Casey hates) who got the job done. The drug trafficker was shot and killed by Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) in the Chicago Fire episode “Let Her Go”.

Hallie may not have had the staying power of some of her peers, but she remains a devastating loss for the Chicago Fire team and a crucial part of Casey’s romantic past.
