We’re now in 2022, which means that networks are beginning to look at their current TV lineups and determining which shows to axe. It’s an annual practice, but given the dedicated fanbases for each of these shows, it can be a difficult practice to get through.

Generally speaking, renewals and cancellation announcements are rolled out between January and May, as networks crunch the numbers and green light new shows in the hopes they can seize the next big hit.

What does that mean for Chicago PD and the rest of the One Chicago universe? Well, here’s a briefer on the show’s status heading into the back end of season 9.

Is Chicago PD coming back for season 10?

Chicago PD has proven itself to be a steady draw for NBC, and has continued to show strong ratings throughout its current season. The concern, of course, is that the network could pull the plug on a show at the last second, but fans can rest assured that it’s not going to happen here.

NBC approved a 3-season renewal for the entire One Chicago franchise back in 2020. This means that Chicago PD has been guaranteed a tenth season, and that new episodes will air until 2023. What’s more, the possibility for renewal is still open at the end of the extension, meaning Chicago PD could run well past the aforementioned 2023 date.

NBC has doled out similar multi-season extensions to hits like New Amsterdam and This Is Us, so its looking like the network’s core lineup of shows will remain intact for the near future. In addition to providing One Chicago fans with a packed roster of new episodes, the extended renewal means that the writers and showrunners will have the time to craft a crossover event between all three shows.

Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas admitted that there were plans for a crossover arc during the current season, but COVID and its resulting complications made it difficult to organize. Given Haas’ enthusiasm for the idea, and the roster of new characters that each show has introduced, there’s all the reason in the world to be excited for the collective (and combined) storylines of the One Chicago universe.
