Chicago Fire season 10 episode count confirmed (and it’s great news for fans)
Chicago Fire might be on break, but there’s still plenty of reasons for fans to rejoice. The beloved drama is currently in the midst of its tenth season, which has had to contend with COVID delays and production shutdowns.
These setbacks have led some to assume that we would be getting an abbreviated episode count, similar to season 9 (which was Fire‘s shortest to date). Fortunately, that won’t be the case. Steve Kern, the head of scheduling for NBC, has confirmed that season 10 will be closer in episode count to seasons prior.
Here’s what you need to know about Chicago Fire and its ongoing episode count.
How many episodes are in Chicago Fire season 10?
Kern told Variety that season 10 will have a total of 22 episodes. He also addressed the string of reruns that have been aired in place of new Fire episodes, and how the Winter Olympics factor into this scheduling decision.
"“So for the Chicago shows, we have 22 episodes”, he confirmed. “The season is 35 weeks. So that means there’s 12 or 13 weeks that we have to schedule either repeats or preemptions to get the shows to fit into the season. I’m more than happy to have a preemption that I know is going to do well, which is the Winter Olympics.”"
This means season 10 will contain the highest episode count for a season of Chicago Fire since 2019. The previous two seasons have offered up increasingly lower numbers of episodes, going from 22 in season 7 to 20 in season 8. The show reached its lowest output in season 9, when the onset of COVID whittled the episode count down to 16.

Kern’s announcement also extends to the rest of the One Chicago universe. Chicago Med and PD will also release 22 episode seasons, which is notably higher than both of their respective outputs in 2020.
Chicago Fire, in the meantime, will return on February 23 following the close of the Olympics. It will minimal interruptions in terms of scheduling, and should adhere to its normal time slot until it reaches its season finale.
