Julie (Kelly Deadmon) is a deceptively important character in the Chicago Fire canon. While she doesn’t appear in a ton of episodes, the fact that she’s the biological mother of Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) means that her involvement in any story is sure to be one filled with drama.

Julie has only appeared in four episodes to date, and her fate in the last of these episodes, “I’ll Cover You”, makes it pretty unlikely that she will return in the future.

Here’s what you need to know about Julie and her greater role within the show.

What happened to Julie on Chicago Fire?

Julie was first introduced in the season 8 episode “Off the Grid”. It’s revealed that she gave birth to Brett when she was only 16 years old, and decided that she wasn’t up to the challenge of raising her so she gave Brett up for adoption.

Julie eventually gets pregnant with a second child, which initiates the desire to tell her husband Scott (Jeff Diebold) about Brett. They then reach out to Brett, and while their attempts connect with Brett are initially awkward, they come to bond over time. The mother and daughter even go shopping together.

Julie gives birth to her second child in the aforementioned episode “I’ll Cover You”, but she’s unable to survive the delivery and ultimately dies. Brett later mentions attending her funeral, and talking the understandably shaken Scott into raising the child (he too considered giving it up for adoption).

The child is eventually named “Amelia”, after Julie’s maiden name.

Things have been slightly contentious between Brett and Scott since Julie’s passing. His decision to move out of Chicago caused some dissent in the episode “51’s Original Ball”, but Scott made a point of saying that Brett is welcome to visit her half-sister anytime she pleases.
