It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a new episode of Chicago PD, but it sounds like the upcoming episode, titled “Still Water”, is going to be worth the wait. We’ve gotten more details about the story as the air date has gotten closer, and it sounds like its going to feature a pivotal subplot for Upton.

The synopsis for the episode reads:

"While out for a jog, Upton witnesses a horrible car crash and risks her own life to save the passengers; after learning more about the victims, the team must track down the man responsible for the brutal crash."

Chicago PD teases its most ‘ambitious’ episode yet

While it certainly sounds intense, the description isn’t giving us the entire picture. At least, that’s what actress Tracy Spiridakos and Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan have suggested in recent interviews.

During a chat with TV Line, Spiridakos said the episode ranks at level 10 in terms of importance, and that the “stakes are pretty high” when one considers the impact it will have on her character. Furthermore, the actress stated: “Hailey has a really crazy episode coming up that I am excited about. There is a very intense case, and Hailey is extremely motivated to solve it.”

Given the revolving door approach that Chicago PD has taken with its stories in season 9, it makes sense that Upton would be the next one to have a narrative focus. She’s been a background player in the last few episodes, which have been largely about Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) and Voight (Jason Beghe).

Upton is in a somewhat precarious spot, given that she was on the cusp of getting arrested by the FBI and seeing her engagement to Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) crumble under the weight of her lie. It’ll be fascinating to see how the character acclimates, especially given the emotional heights that are being teased in “Still Water”.

Gwen Sigan told TV Line that the episode is going to be one of the most ambitious in PD history. “It’s been one of the most ambitious episodes we’ve done on the show so far, especially from a production standpoint”, she added. “I can’t wait to see what our director Chad [Saxton] and our crew pull off, and to see Tracy in this one.”

We’re not sure where Upton’s encounter with the car accident is going to lead, but given the hype that both star and showrunner are stirring up, we can’t wait to find out.
