Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) has only been gone for half a season, but it feels much longer. The character was a staple for so long that Chicago Fire is still trying to fill his spot, and newcomer Jason Pelham (Brett Dalton) has done an admirable job.

While Casey’s exit was emotional, Spencer made it clear that the character is still very much a part of the 51 family. He even left the door open to return to the show, should his scheduling and the script permit it.

Here’s what you need to know about Casey and his upcoming return to Chicago Fire.

Is Casey coming back to Chicago Fire season 10?

During a recent interview with Variety, showrunner Derek Haas opened up about Casey and the possibility that he make a cameo in season 10. While Haas had previously been vague about the details, he provided some crucial insight into the character’s timeline.

The topic of Casey’s return was mentioned in relation to the upcoming Stellaride wedding. Haas didn’t outright confirm the character’s involvement, but he did say that it would be a great shame if he wasn’t in attendance to support his friends. “I would be mortified if there was a wedding that didn’t include Casey”, he added.

The fact that Casey is still a regular topic of discussion on the show is an encouraging sign that he will come back. Brett (Kara Killmer) has mentioned taking time off work to go visit Casey, and we have even gotten a chance to hear the character over voicemail. The effort that’s been put into keeping him relevant would make less sense if weren’t scheduled for a comeback of some sort.

These points line up with a previous interview Haas gave to Us Weekly in 2021. It was here that he said Casey’s was very likely. “Whenever Jesse wants to come do an episode with us, we will move mountains and earth to make that happen”, he stated. “We’ve been talking. We’ve got some ideas of what that would be.”

While the timing of Stellaride’s wedding remains unclear, it looks like the chances of Casey making a guest appearance are high. We can’t wait to see him with his 51 brethren once again.
