Burgess (Marina Squierciati) and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) did not have an easy week on Chicago PD. The officers were thrown into every parent’s nightmare when they discovered that their daughter Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) had been kidnapped.

The subsequent handling of the case saw Burgess and Ruzek take two very different approaches. Burgess was measured and methodical, while Ruzek was impulsive and aggressive, leading to a few inappropriate interactions with suspects.

The couple were able to recover Makayla, but lingering questions remain: will the couple get back together? Are they going to continue on as a family or go their separate ways?

Are Burgess and Ruzek dating again?

Ruzek has been a pillar of support for Burgess and Makayla throughout season 9. He helped look after Makayla when Burgess was in the hospital, and shares several of the parenting duties even though he is technically single.

This single status reared its ugly head earlier in season 9. Burgess told Ruzek that she didn’t want to confuse Makayla, and that Ruzek should spend less time around them if he plans to stay single. He was upset by the suggestion, and things eventually blew over, but the issue was never solved.

The end of the latest episode suggests that Burgess and Ruzek are headed for a rough patch in their relationship. The two of them share a brief moment of peace with Makayla, and Burgess goes as far as to grab Ruzek’s hand, but Ruzek pulls away and leaves the room.

There’s a huge difference in how these two cops approach life, and it has kept them apart despite their care for one another. Marina Squierciati seemingly agrees. During a recent interview with Cinemablend, the star discussed the changes that will need to happen in order for them to stay connected.

"“I think this was a moment where everything was laid bare to kind of dire consequences… I don’t know if they can come back from that. They just have different approaches to life. So we’ll see.”"

Flueger remains confident that the pair will end up together in the long run, while echoing his co-star in saying that it will be a difficult journey to get there. “I think at the end of the day, they’ll end up together, but I don’t think it’s an easy road to get there”, he explained, bringing a definite sigh of relief to the One Chicago faithful.
