Chicago Med packed a surprise into the final scene of the episode “May Your Choices Reflect Hope, Not Fear“. After all of the week’s subplots were resolved, Dr. Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) revealed that Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) has rejoined the staff’s OB-GYN service.

TV Line has confirmed that the character will become a series regular, which is interesting given that Hannah hasn’t made an appearance since season 5. The concern over whether the character is ready to resume medical duties is understandable given her past indiscretions, and people like Dr. Archer (Steven Weber) fear that history will repeat itself.

For those who don’t quite remember Hannah’s character arc, here’s a rundown of what happened to her and what her promotion to series regular will mean for Chicago Med as a whole.

Who plays Hannah Asher on Chicago Med?

Hannah was introduced in the season 5 episode “Leave the Choice to Solomon”. She was an obstetrician and gynecologist who juggled her busy schedule with a crippling heroin addiction. The addiction becomes so severe that Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) eventually finds out and threatens to report her if she doesn’t get it under control.

Halstead agrees to keep it a secret for a time, and the two even develop romantic feelings for one another, but Hannah’s addiction reaches such a low that Halstead makes an anonymous call and gets Hannah arrested.

She struggles in rehab throughout the rest of the season, and is able to resume her relationship with Halstead when she gets out, but the latter fears that she’s using their connection as a replacement for her addictive tendencies.

In the season 6 episode “When Did We Begin to Change”, an argument leads to Hannah relapsing and being rushed into the ED. She’s able to pull through once again, but the relapse leads Halstead to call off their relationship. Hannah decides to leave Chicago in an effort to maintain sobriety.

All that said, her return to Chicago Med is a bit of a shock. She’s struggled so intensely in the past, and her dynamic with Halstead is so riddled with drama that it will be interesting to see the ways in which she’s matured. It’ll also be intriguing to see if she tries to rekindle her romance with the doctor, or whether she will develop feelings for someone else on the staff.

Either way, we can’t fault Dr. Archer for his skepticism. As far as additions go, Hannah is one of the most promising in recent memory.
