Chicago PD has a long and storied history of shocking deaths. It makes sense. Given the danger the main characters are subjected to on a weekly basis, there are bound to be some unfortunate incidents involving gunplay and/or the devious actions of criminals.

That being said, there hasn’t been a major death on the show in quite some time. Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) almost died during the season 9 premiere, but she was able to pull through her gunshot wounds and get back on the job.

Is a permanent retirement in the cards for any of the main cast members in season 9? Here’s what we know.

Who dies in Chicago PD season 9?

The issue was sparked during a recent interview by Us Weekly. The publication sat down with Patrick Flueger and the aforementioned Squerciati to discuss their recent character arcs on the show, but when the topic of death came up, both actors hinted at the unpredictability they often face when they approach a season finale.

“We always think [we’re going to get killed off]”, Flueger revealed. “Especially when we get toward episode 22, 23. It’s kind of like, ‘Oh, am I dying?'” The actor went on to joke that if the series finale aired tomorrow, he would be the most likely to be killed off. “Me, die!”, he quipped.

Squerciati echoed her co-star’s feelings, explaining that the concern over whether her character is going to make up ratchets up whenever there’s a turning point. “You just never know”, she added. “We’re on, like, [episode] 20 now!”

Both characters have been through the ringer in season 9, with Burgess’ shooting, Ruzek’s crisis of faith in the job, and their collective panic when their adopted daughter Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) was kidnapped.

Fortunately, Burgess and Ruzek look to be safe from the clutches of death. Showrunner Gwen Sigan has spoken at length about the duo and how their path to a potentially rekindled romance will make up some of the show’s most interesting arcs down the line.

“The adjustment’s complicated—this case brought a lot of emotion and stress up for both of them, and also highlighted a lot of difficulties already embedded in their relationship” Sigan told Give Me My Remote. “Things will come to a head. And they will need to hash out the emotional and logistical fall out for their family.”

This could be a means of throwing us off the trail of one of their deaths come the season finale, but we remain confident that Burgess and Ruzek will stick around and will continue to be at the forefront of the show moving forward. Of course, their being safe means other characters may be put in harm’s way instead… Only time will tell if the season 9 finale will yield tragic results for our favorite police unit.
