Chicago Fire has parted ways with some major characters in season 10. Casey (Jesse Spencer) and his replacement Pelham (Brett Dalton) left the 51, while Brett (Kara Killmer) decided to take away from work to focus on her relationship.
These departures have left the door open for new characters to enter, and few have left as big a first impression as Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver). Jacobs is filling in for Brett during her absence, and given the story threads that are being set up between her and the rest of the fire team, fans are beginning to question if she’s replacing Brett permanently.
Here’s what you need to know about Jacobs and Brett’s respective futures.
Who plays Emma Jacobs on Chicago Fire?
The good news is that Brett is coming back. Fire showrunner Derek Haas has confirmed that the character is merely stepping away for a few episodes, and will be back in the mix before long. He also alluded to the fact that she will return with Casey during a recent interview with Newsweek.
Jacobs’ blunt approach to treatment has already turned the head of Violet, who will be spending the most time with her. Hanako Greensmith, who plays Violet, reflected on the unique impression and how Jacobs will factor into the rest of season 10.
"“She’s definitely not a character that I think our show often has to toy with or has to battle”, the actress told CinemaBlend. “So it’s gonna be really interesting seeing how she weaves within the firehouse. She’s someone that I think will surprise quite a few people, and will definitely surprise Violet as well.”"

The interest may allude to Jacobs and Violet clashing over work issues, or personal ones, in the case of Gallo (Alberto Rosende). Violet and Gallo are going to have to work on repairing their once close friendship, but Jacobs was openly flirtatious with Gallo throughout the episode “Keep You Safe”. Depending on what her motives are, Violet may or not approve of the prospective romance.
There’s also the matter of Brett, and what her return will mean for Jacobs in the long run. As is the case with most recurring characters, Jacobs’ fate will depend on how much fans like or dislike her. We can’t wait to see the fresh (and unpredictable) energy she brings to the table in the meantime.
