Chicago Med has had no shortage of drama in season 7. Character exits and introductions have become commonplace at the Gaffney Medical Center, and long-standing staff have had to deal with some major changes.

Maggie Campbell (Marlyne Barrett) and Dr. Vanessa Taylor (Asjha Cooper) are chief among these staff members. They’ve both grown drastically since finding out they were mother and daughter, but Med showrunners have suggested that there’s still plenty of emotional ground for them to make up.

Here’s what you need to know about the duo heading into the season 7 home stretch.

What happened to Maggie in Chicago Med season 7?

Maggie and Vanessa have been on good terms for the last several episodes, and Maggie went as far as to fear for Vanessa’s safety when she helped Dr. Scott (Guy Lockard) with a criminal patient. That said, the two of them have differing outlooks, and these outlooks are going to be clashing sooner than later.

Chicago Med showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider told TV Line that the chess pieces have already been set for the “explosive” standoff between the characters.

"“When she went to find Vanessa, she wound up lighting a fuse”, Schneider revealed. “And she has no idea where that bomb is gonna go off. And there’s more explosions to come.”"

Maggie has been through the ringer thus far in season 7. She thought she may have gotten pregnant in the episode, but a test showed that not only was she not pregnant, but she may be suffering from a form of cancer. Secondary tests proved that the cancer reading was negative, but the shift from good news to awful news definitely caught her off guard.

The actress who plays Maggie, Marlyne Barrett, told TV Line that the character has to shoulder the shifting moods of the hospital, and serves as a sort of connecter for the rest of the staff.

"“[She’s] like this barometer that connects everyone”, Barrett noted. “She’s running the ED and making sure that the flow of the patients that come in are all cared for, but at the same time, she has this relationship with every single one of them.”"

The need to shoulder the stress and dynamics of others may also be a contributing factor to the eventual blow up between Maggie and Vanessa. It’ll be tough to watch, given how beloved both of the characters, but we’re confident they will be able to get through it.
